Workshop:

Advancing Excellence in Treating Complex Trauma

Presented by Kathleen Martin, LCSW

November 3-4, 2017

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

8:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. both days

Description

This 2 day workshop will help clinicians transform the quality and pace of their work with complex trauma.  Key strategies to treat complex trauma to prevent reliving, relapses and stalled treatment progress will be presented.  The delicate work of treating cognitive errors which hold non-realization in its dysfunctional homeostasis will be taught and demonstrated.  Working with self-persecutory parts and their contributions to maintaining non-realization will be explored.  A sophisticated checklist for clinicians to use in case consultation and self-supervision to reverse unremitting symptoms in stalled complex trauma cases will be presented to increase therapist skill and confidence.  How to treat attachment trauma within a complex trauma framework will be addressed. Overall, this workshop will teach sophisticated and advanced skills to treat complex trauma and dissociation.

Please note:   The Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality is used throughout this workshop and it will be assumed that participants are well grounded in this theory.  It will also be assumed that participants have knowledge and skill in the fundamentals of treating dissociation:  the dissociative table, how to work with parts of the personality, working with dissociative phobias, time orientation, and a myriad of stabilization skills.  If you don’t have this theory and skill set or would like a refresher, it is highly recommended that you attend the September 2017 workshop entitled Mastering the Treatment of Complex Trauma: Transforming Theory into Practice offered in Buffalo, NY and Toronto, Canada.  For more details, please go to www.kmccs.com.

Objectives

1.     List 1 condition in which the Benefit Question is best used

2.     Describe the most common way a dissociative phobia is unintentionally increased in psychotherapy

3.     Define dissociative cognitive errors

4.     List 3 possible reasons for an unremitting symptom in complex trauma cases

5.     Explain how treating attachment trauma requires skills in treating emotional parts of the personality.
